June 27, 2016 – Battle of Bighorn and Cody
We left the hotel at 7:30am and drove to the site of the Battle of Bighorn. We had an hour and a half at Bighorn. We walked up to where Custer’s last stand took place. They have gravestones to show where he and his units died. None of the bodies are there. Custer is actually buried at West Point. We listened to a lecture telling us about the battle.
After leaving Bighorn, we crossed back into Wyoming to cross the mountains to head to Cody. The bus climbed and climbed to 8327 feet before starting to head down. We stopped for lunch at an inn in the mountains. Our next stop was Shell Waterfall on the Shell River. The ridge in the distance shows the lines in the stone made from repeated seismic activity.
We reached Cody at 3pm and had the option of going to the hotel or the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. We’ll be going to the Center for 2 hours tomorrow. Linda had been here before and told Earl and I we should go both times because it is too big to see in 2 hours. Only 7 of us got off at the Center. We made it through 3 of the 5 sections today – Firearms Museum, Whitney western art museum, and Plains Indian Museum. Tomorrow we’ll do the Buffalo Bills Museum and the Natural History Museum as well as the gardens.
The rodeo is here in Cody tonight but we decided to skip it and get to bed early. Tomorrow after the visit to the Center, we head to Yellowstone.
