July 5 – Grand Canyon and Page AZ
We stopped at Red Canyon arch for pictures before heading for the Grand Canyon.
Kanab, Kane County, Utah is where Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, The Lone Ranger, Outlaw Josie Wales, Drums Along the Mohawk were all filmed here. The first films were made here in 1924. The people in area were able to provide wagons and other props as well as be in the movies as extras including the many Native Amerixans that were needed for the westerns.
We stopped at the Movie Museum in Kanab and saw some of the structures built for different movies.
As we crossed the Arizona border we changed our watches back an hour since they don’t use Daylight Savings time.
We got to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon at 11am and had 1/2 hour to run over to the rim and get some pictures before we met for lunch at the lodge dining room overlooking the canyon.
After lunch Earl, Linda, and I started walking around the trail that has overlooks that you can go out to. Much of the trail has a cliff into the canyon on one side. I have vertigo and get dizzy if I look down from a high place. I spent the time walking looking straight out and no one got between me and the wall on the other side of the path. The canyon is beautiful. It is amazing how different Bryce, Zion, and the Grand Canyon are. This trip has had some fantastic sights so far.
As we headed to Page AZ we drove past the Vermillion Cliffs. At the Navajo Bridge we saw 3 condors standing on a nearby cliff.
We are staying in Page, AZ for the next 2 nights. Tomorrow morning we take a boat ride on Lake Powell. Some of us are taking 4x4s to Antelope Slot Canyon and doing a little hike through the slot canyon.
