October 2 – Bernese Oberland
We left the hotel at 9am heading to the Lautenbrunnen Valley. In Interlaken the day started off cool (48°) and light rain. Simona has told us the rest of the day will be beautiful weather (maybe). We stopped for quick pictures of one of the 72 waterfalls in the valley. It was raining heavily by the time we got to Trummlebach Falls. This is actually 10 waterfalls that get water from the glacier melt from the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. They are the only glacier-waterfalls in Europe inside mountains and still accessible. We took an elevator to the 5th level and then took stairs to the top. Many of the stairs were outside the mountain so we all got quite wet. On the way down Carol and I decided to skip the elevator and walked all the way down. By the time we left everyone was very wet.
We took a cog train up to Kleine Scheidegg which is at an altitude of 6762 feet. We had lunch and hiked a little here. it was very cloudy and we could only see the top of Eiger briefly. The other 2 mountains (Monck and Jungfrau) were completely behind clouds. We could look down though and see the village of Grimmwald. We took a different train down the other side of the mountain to where out bus was waiting to take us back to the hotel.
Tomorrow we will travel to Seefeld Austria stopping briefly in Lichtenstein.
