October 6, 2016 – Oberammergau and Linderhof Castle
We left for our first foray into Germany at 9:30am. Our destination was Oberammergau. This is the town were they perform the Passion Play every 10 years. It started in 1634 because they believed no one would die from the plague if it was performed. Only children from the town or persons who have lived here for 20 years or longer can perform in the play. The population of the town is 5400 and most are involved in one way or another. The production lasts from May until early October. Our guide said the town loves having the play but are glad when it ends. We toured the theater and got to see props and costumes used in the last season of 2010. The next season is 2020 and tickets go on sale in 2018.
After our tour, we were let loose to wander around the town and to get lunch. There are many wood carvers in the town and their shops were full of interesting items. The town is also known for the frescos painted on houses and buildings.
After lunch, we traveled to Linderhof. This is one of three castles that Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria built but the only one that he lived in. It was very opulent.
On the ride back the mountains looked fantastic. They had snow at the top and the sun was hitting them just right. Our bus didn’t stop but I’ve included 2 photos I took from the bus.
Tomorrow we will start packing up so the morning is free time. Late afternoon we’ll go to Mitterwald for a special Tyrol farewell dinner.

Thinking about this trip, glorious is the only word that comes to mind. Wishing you a quick and easy trip home.
