February 28, 2018 – Isla Isabela & Isla Fernandia
We all got up at 6am to go to Urbina Bay on Isla Isabela. We took a 1 1/2 hour hike and saw Darwin swifts, a mocking bird, Galapagos hawk, and many land iguanas. It was a wet landing which means that you get off the Zodiac into water. At the end of the hike, we each had to wade into the water and get into the Zodiac. On my first attempt I fell backwards into the water and my backpack got all wet. Unfortunately, I hadn’t put my camera in a plastic bag. As of now, my camera is no longer working. Pictures from now on will be taken with my tablet. I’ll post the pictures from this morning in my final post for this trip.
Five of the group went snorkeling before lunch but said the water was too murky.
After lunch, the boat moved to Espinoza Point at Isla Fernandia. Most of us went snorkeling here. We saw sea turtles, cormorants, and fish. After returning to the ship and showering, we went to hike around Espinoza Point. This is the newest island in the Galapagos. The surface was mostly hardened lava. The Marine Iguanas come in during late Afternoon and lay on the hot stones in large groups to keep warm overnight. We saw hundreds of marine iguanas. Sea lions also populate the island. We saw a young sea .ion suckling on his mother. It was quite noisy.
Back on ship we learned how to make a caprinha and then we were all treated to one. After dinner we watched a documentary on the U.S. air base on Baltra Island during WWII.
