March 4, 2018 – Santa Cruz and South Plaza Island
After dinner last night we sailed to the north side of Santa Cruz Island. Four crew members were leaving and 4 new crew were replacing them.
We were able to sleep in and have breakfast at 7:30am. It was a beautiful sunrise. We have had fantastic weather this whole trip. Today is our last full day in the Galapagos. Tomorrow we fly back to Quito.
Our first stop was a wet landing at a beach that I went to last year. We hiked to a pond where we were able to see two flamingoes. We returned to the ship and after putting on our wet suits we snorkeled near the beach. I saw a sea turtle and a few fish but the water was fairly rough so I stopped after 20 minutes.
After lunch and a long siesta we went to South Plaza Island where the famous hybrid iguanas live. These were only discovered in the last 2 years. They are sterile and have yellow stripes on their necks. We, unfortunately, did not see any of them.
Back on the ship they served a farewell dinner on the 2nd floor rear deck.
