March 5, 2018 – San Cristobal to Quito

After breakfast we said goodbye to the crew of the Alya and took our last dingy ride to the dock at San Cristobal.    We went to the Interpretive Center which has exhibits spanning the creation of the islands to the present.  It was very interesting and rounded out our knowledge of what we had seen.

After lunch we flew to Guayquil where we were to continue on the same plane to Quito.  Unfortunately the plane had some problem so they switched us to another flight. We arrived at Quito airport after 6pm. Fatima was there to meet us.  She announced that our farewell dinner, scheduled for that evening, was switched to tomorrow night.  We were glad to hear the news. After getting to the hotel, we went around the corner for a light dinner and back to our rooms to sleep.

March 6, 2018 – Last Day in Quito

We met Fatima at 8:15 to go hear the Sinamune Disabled Children’s Orchestra play.   Sinamune was founded by Maestro Edgar Palacios in 1993.  He is considered Ecuador’s finest trumpet player.  The school teaches students with special needs to play musical instruments and to dance in addition to regular school subjects.   The show was very good and we were all invited up to dance for the final number.

Next up was a trip to the Equator Museum.   We learned about the original inhabitants and then got to do experiments on the equator.   It was really a fun stop.

The afternoon was on our own to pack.  All of us had flights that left shortly after midnight.

Our Farewell Dinner was in a museum which displayed ceramic work, textiles, and musical instruments of the various Ecuadorian tribes.  The dinner was traditional Ecuadorian foods and was delicious.

My flight left at 12:30am EST on March 7 and I was home by noon PST.
