September 28, 2018 – Catania, Sicily
Since this was a port just added 2 days ago, I decided to take a ship’s tour to Syracuse. We left the ship at 8am. It took just over an hour to get there . We went first to see the ruins. The Greek side had a large quarry and a Coliseum. On the Roman side we saw an amphitheater and large altar used for sacrifices.
Next we went to the area which they call The Island. We started at the ruins of the Temple of Apollo . We were given 1 1/2 hours to wander on our own, The guide showed many us the way to the Cathedral Square. There was an open air market near our meeting point. I wandered through the fish and fruit and vegetable stands. The city has an interesting blend of old and new.
Tomorrow we are in Valletta, Malta.
