October 23, 2018 – Nijmegen, Netherlands
For the first time we docked right next to the town that we are visiting. We went out at 9am for a walking tour. It was 48°F out and windy. At the end of the tour five of us decided to warm up with hot chocolate.
Next we went to the Cathedral. We had been told the story behind the painting of the bearded woman that hangs in the church. It took a while to find. She supposedly was to marry a pagan and overnight a beard grew on her face. Her betrothed was appalled and left. She was thought to be a witch and crucified. She is now a saint.
We headed back to the ship for lunch. After lunch they had a woman give a lecture about the WWII Operation Market Garden. The story is shown in the movie “A Bridge Too Far”. When the US Army crossed the Waal River to surround the Germans 48 men died. Today a bridge stands on that site. Every night at sunset 48 lights come on across the bridge, one at a time, to honor those men.
Tomorrow we see windmills and go to see the Delta Works that holds back the water from flooding the Netherlands.
