October 24, 2018 – Kinderdijk
After breakfast, we walked across the street and boarded a small boat to sail down a waterway between windmills. The windmills on the left pump excess water from the highest waterway to the next waterway. The windmills on the right pump the water into the lowest waterway. This is done to keep farm fields from flooding. We visited a typical mill where a family with 7 to 9 children might have lived.
Back on board we had our disembarkation meeting so people know what to do on Friday. Since I have made my own plans to take a noon train to Paris, I’ll leave the ship shortly after 9am and head to the station. I’m hoping to store my bags and wander that part of town.
After lunch we arrived in Willemstad. We had two choices – visit the town or go to the Delta Works and learn about the flood surge barrier that was constructed. I opted for the Delta Works. This took 10 years of planning and 10 years of construction. It is considered One of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World. It is incredible to learn about and amazing to see.
Tomorrow is Antwerp.
