March 22, 2019 – Cascais, Sintra, and Lisbon
This morning we went by bus to Cascais, a coastal resort town 30 minutes outside Lisbon. We had time to walk around. It is a very beautiful town that would be a great place to stay and relax for a few days. I had a caramel gelato.
We continued on to Sintra. This is where the royals would spend a month each summer. (The second month was spent in Cascais. ) We toured the royal castle which included walking up and down100+ steps. Francisco explained each room as we walked. It was quite amazing.
We stopped for lunch on the outskirts of Sintra. We had a vegetable soup and a fish entree. As a surprise, they had a Fado singer and 2 guitarists entertain us. They performed three songs and were given a standing ovation by our group. I had bought a signed CD by the singer.
We got back to Lisbon at 3:30pm. Francisco offered a trip to the site of the 1998 Lisbon World’s Fair. Ten of us went with him. The area where the fair was erected had been filled with derelict piers and warehouses. The new buildings and parks replaced them. Since the fair the buildings have been used to house restaurants, a casino, a shopping mall, and exhibit halls. We walked the length of the park.
For dinner, Karen and I went to a restaurant called “Sacramento”. The food was very good. As always the food was large portions so neither of us could finish our meals.
