October 16, 2019 – Chimney Rock and Lake Lure
A cold front came in over night so starting out the temperature was 48o with a predicted high of 58.
We headed out at 8:45am in the vans. They had warned those who get carsick to take their medicine. We traveled over the mountains to the east side. The road were very windy. We crossed the Eastern Continental Divide. It was foggy and misty as we drove and when we first got to Chimney Rock you couldn’t see it because of the fog.
They took us to a classroom where we learned about and met three different birds – an eastern screech owl, a red tailed hawk and a great horned owl.
When we went outside the weather had cleared a little. I started the 500 step climb to the top of Chimney Rock but after 150 or so stairs, I turned around and went down. I got to the top by taking the elevator. We were lucky because every few minutes the clouds would separate so we could see the view. By the time we were back in the van and ready to move on, there were no clouds or fog anywhere.
We drove 10 minutes to Lake Lure where we boarded boats for a one hour tour of the lake. It was windy and cool during the return to the dock.
We got back to the Assembly Inn in time for dinner and an open evening. After dinner I worked on resizing my pictures for the blog before going to sleep.
