December 28, 2019 – Flying to Los Angeles
This is being posted a week late because this tour didn’t leave me time to post.
I am going on the Road Scholar Rose Parade program.
My friend Jan drove my to Oakland Airport for my flight to Burbank. As usual I got there early to find my flight was delayed hour. By the time I finished my latte, the flight time changed to a 2 hour delay. Upon arrival in Burbank, I took a taxi to my hotel, Westin Bonaventure in L.A., and had my room key and tour packet by 3pm. There are about 500 of us in this program. We are split between 2 hotels. At each hotel, we are divided into groups of 40. I am in the Topaz group. We met at 4:30pm to review the schedule and then had dinner. After dinner I went to the revolving lounge on the top floor of the hotel. Spectacular views. I was in bed by 10am because we have breakfast tomorrow starting at 5:30am and need to be on the bus by 7am
December 29, 2019 – Pasadena, CA
The bus got us to Pasadena by 7:30am and we walked to the AES float decorating warehouse. AES is the smallest of the professional float making companies. Most of the menial work is done by volunteers. Our first job was cutting the petals off statice. We had to throw any white flowers away and only cut the bluish-purple ones. It was very tedious work. We were told that they would be used for the blue jeans on the Honda float.
After 3 1/2 of this we got our lunch break. When I returned. I started cutting Rose’s and inserting each into a plastic vial filled with nutrients and water. These vials would eventually be put on the float. I think I did over 1,000 roses during the afternoon. They were for the Honda, Amazon Video, Blue Diamond Almond, and China Air floats.
Back at the hotel we had a nice dinner followed by music by a local jazz group.
To bed early again.
