February 12, 2020 – Trondheim
This trip is unlike the usual “breakfast at 7, bags out at 8, leave at 9” tour. We have a lot of time sailing. Today we arrived in Trondheim at 10am and left at 1:30pm. I had a leisurely breakfast and met up with our group at 10am. Peter had a bus take us on a city tour. It CD was sunny so we headed up into one of the hills to get a panoramic view of the city. Unfortunately, the land between the road and the overlook was covered with ice. I was the only one to make my way out across the ice field other than the man with spikes on his shoes. It was an impressive view.
Back into the city we saw the the main hospital and the university. We were dropped off by the old bridge that crosses the river. After taking some pictures, we walked to the Nidaros Cathedral. The original cathedral was built in the 12 century but was rebuilt numerous times due to fires. In 1869, a major reconstruction started that went on until 2001. We had a guided tour. The Cathedral is very beautiful.
We got back to the ship at 1:15pm. In my unending quest to eat with non-Americans, I had lunch with 4 Brits.
At 3:30pm, the ship had free Norwegian blue mussels to taste. They were very good. At 3:55pm we passed Norway’s cutest lighthouse (their designation).
At 4:15pm, Peter showed us pictures he has taken and told us about living in Northern Norway both during the 2 months of continuous sunlight and 2 months of no sunlight.
Sarah, a fellow traveler, and I decided to go to the not included restaurant for dinner. The up charge was only 290 or (about $32). I had a scallop appetizer, Halibut entree, and dessert. It was worth every penny.
At 9:30pm they are having a movie about the Northern Lights. I’ll post this before I go.
Tomorrow morning we pass the Arctic Circle. We have 7 stops tomorrow but we only get off at 2 of them. I am taking a ships excursion to a Viking Museum and dinner with Vilings in the Lofoten Islands. I get off at one stop and back on at the next stop.
