October 21, 2021 – Ronda
Our driver has today off so we spent the whole day in Ronda.
At 9am we had two locals, Armando and Jaime, give us both sides of the ongoing Spanish controversy of Monarchy vs Republic as the future for Spain. It was a fascinating debate and both sides had legitimate points. They tend to agree that the next monarch might be the last.
From 10am to 1230pm, we had a local guide, Jose Jo, take us up and down backstreet in the old Town. He told us a lot of stories and history. Many famous people have enjoyed staying in Ronda including Hemingway, Washington Irving, Howard Hughes, and Benjamin Disraeli.
There is a gorge separating the old Town from the newer part of town. The New Bridge is right next to our paradore. It was built in the 1750’s. Further down the gorge is the Moor Bridge which was built by the Arabs. The last bridge is the Roman Bridge which was built by the Moors.
Behind the old Town the view is of fields and mountains. This is a wonderful town to visit.
I walked down a path to the Moor Bridge and then back up to our hotel.
Tomorrow we stop in Cordoba on our way to Ubeda.
