Our visit last night to Sira’s house was a lot of fun. She, her sister, and mother live in an apartment that covers the whole 8th floor of their building. They have owned the apartment 41 years. Her sister, Lettie, teaches English and had lived in the U.S. for a number of years. Her mom is 83. We drank wine and ate traditional Spanish finger foods.
We left Santander at 9am after Sira checked that we had everything including our passports. Our final destination is Oviedo. We will be traveling through Asturias Region.. After an hour on the road, we had a Cafe con Leche break in a small town.
Back on the road, we headed to Covadonga. It is the spot where in 722, the king pushed out the Moors. It also contains a famous grotto honoring the Virgin Mary.
We stopped at another town for a typical Austurian lunch. We each started with a cheese tray followed by a stew of large white beans with pork called Faraday. We finished the meal with rice pudding. It was all very delicious. We had leftover cheese so we took a doggie bag for later.
We arrived in Ovieda at 4:30pm. Tomorrow we get up early for our Covid test and then tour the city.
Bad wifi at hotel so pix had to be resized.
