December 25 – 26, 2021 – Heading to Antarctica

December 25, 2021 Merry Christmas.

Last night they announced that we would have an hour zodiak tour at 7am. I awoke at 6am and still had a little knee pain but thought I could go. As I walked down the stairs to the mud room, my knee just gave out. I wasn’t able to put weight on my right leg.
I was helped back to my cabin and am staying in bed all day. My dining companions brought me a bottle of champagne from the holiday brunch. The Dining Room delivered my meals.
Due to Covid, the doctor is isolated and can’t look at my knee. I’ll just take it easy until it feels better.
In the afternoon the ship was supposed to sail down a fjord to a Glacier and then come back to set sail for Antarctica. As they entered the Fjord, the winds were at 60 knots so they immediately turned around and we left So.Georgia Island 2 hours early.
The seas will be very rough for the next day and a half. They expect 3 to 4 meter waves. My cabin is on deck 6 a little ahead of midship. When the ship is rocking, I need to stow everything so nothing rolls off and breaks. I have no problem with seasickness because I use Scopolamine patches.
I just received my Christmas dinner of turkey and pumpkin pie. It looks yummy.
SPOILER ALERT: January 11, 2022 – My knee still has some soreness but I am able to walk 1+ mile with minimal pain wearing a knee brace. Will have it examined when Covid risk declines.

December 26, 2021 – At Sea
Today is a sea day. I am staying in bed to let my knee rest.
The rest of the group have had a lecture on Antarctic Krill and had their gear vacuumed in preparation for landing in Antarctica.
This afternoon was another Covid test. More positive cases. We were not told how many. The Falkland Islands will not let us land there so they are extending our time in Antarctica.
The sea has been rough with 3 to 4 meter high waves. They are saying that tonight will be worse.
It still hurts to put weight on my knee but at least this is a sea day.
