I woke up this morning to a cloudy sky and snow on my balcony. I decided to take the zodiak tour of Curtiss Bay. Putting my boots on was the only hard part in getting ready. Climbing into the zodiak turned out to be uneventful. I have been scared of twisting it and doing more damage but it was easy.
We sailed around an ice filled bay for over an hour. Kevin, our expedition guide, made sure gave us a detailed explanation of what we were seeing. We saw a young leopard seal lounging on an iceberg. Many of the icebergs that we saw were a beautiful blue. When the ice gets compacted over hundreds of years the blue shows because the air bubbles have been compressed out and the light reflects a blue color.
In the afternoon the zodiaks went out again for a landing. My knee was hurting a little so I skipped this. We are parked in a huge bay. It is about 40 degrees out and the ice glistens in the sunshine.
We are waiting to see if Argentina will follow the U.S. and switch to 5 day Covid quarantine. Our next test is January 1st. The passengers who tested positive initially haven’t left their cabins despite follow up negative tests. If the 5 day rule goes into affect they’ll get at least a few days to enjoy Antarctica.
