December 31, 2021 – NYE on Antarctica

My alarm clock woke me up at 2:45am. I quickly dressed and went up to deck 8. Over a 45 minute period I watched as the mountains on my right were slowly illuminated by the rising sun on my left.
Back in my cabin I was unable to get back to sleep. After breakfast, I decided to skip the morning island landing because it sounded too rocky for me.
In the afternoon there was a landing on a beach on the Antarctic continent. I got suited up and went down to get on the zodiak. When we got to the beach, I slowly slid off the boat and happily was able to stand. I used my trekking poles to get up a short hill and sat down on a barrel. We had 3 choices – hike up a steep snow hill, hike on a level snowy path, or sit on a barrel and observe the penguins. I opted for the third choice. I was just glad that my knee was healed enough for me to step on Antarctica.
We had an outdoor BBQ for dinner. It was fun to watch everyone in their ski jackets eating outdoors.
At 9pm the expedition team put on a show for us. The best act was by the bird expert. He is British, brilliant, and very reserved. He performed to the song YMCA with all the appropriate dance moves including pelvic thrusts.
At 10pm the party moved to the 8th floor lounge. The 5 people that I have been eating meals with all went. We had our group picture taken with the Glacier behind us. I faded fast and was in my cabin asleep by 1030pm.
