We got to sleep in today. Our only excursion was at 10:15am to Edfu Temple. Horse-drawn carriages waited on the street outside where we docked. Most of the horses were old and emaciated. The drivers won’t allow any other vehicles to transport passengers from the river to the temple. In addition, we were told that the drivers would hound us for tips even though the tour company had paid them and tipped them. We were each given 20 Egyptian Pounds to give them when we returned to the ship. I’m glad that they warned us about the horses and drivers before we started out.
The temple was covered in silt and, in 1868, a Frenchman started excavating. It is nearly intact and a good example of an Egyptian Temple. It was built to honor the god Horus. After a tour of the temple, we headed back to the boat.
We were welcomed back with fresh lemonade. The ship set sail one everyone was on board.
The rest of the day had nothing until right before dinner. We then had a meeting to learn about tomorrow’s trips and saw a movie about moving the two temples of Abu Simpel from the Aswan Dam flood area up to an area above the lake water.
Tomorrow we go to the Aswan Dam and then fly to Abu Simbel. Breakfast at 630am and on the buses at 730am.
