Another 8:30am departure today. We tendered into Newport and loaded onto buses. We drove through the Colonial section of town with houses built in the 1600’s and 1700’s. The houses quickly changed to the mansions built in the 1800’s . Our guide told us that many were abandoned by their owners and in the 1960’s could be purchased for $60,000.
The Gilded Age mansions came next. These were built in the late 1800’s and were considered summer cottages by the owners. We slowly drove by many of them. We stopped at The Breakers built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. It is considered the grandest of these summer homes. We were able to tour through the mansion. The mansions were only occupied 2 months per year.
We got back to the ship at 1pm and sailed out at 3pm.
Tomorrow we will be in New York City. I had hoped to spend the night at my sister-in-laws house but the tour leader says I can’t be gone overnight because of the Jones Act. I was able to get a place on the New York at night tour.
