This morning we went to Joya de Ceren.  This is archaeological site, like Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy, that was destroyed by volcanic eruption around 600AD. The site was discovered in 1976 when a bulldozer unearthed exposed part of a structure. No human remains have been found so they believe everyone escaped leaving their homes as they were when the first eruption started.  It was interesting to see the excavation site and learn how they pieced together what they have discovered about the community.   There was a river next to the site which spread the volcanic ash. There are 14 distinct layers of volcanic ash.  We went through the museum to see the recovered items.
We headed back to San Salvador for lunch.  Afterwards, we rode to the city center and went to the crypt of Bishop Oscar Romero , the only Salvadoran Saint,  to learn about him. He was assassinated in 1980 by a death squad because he spoke out against injustices to poor people.
In a park in the city we listened to music and watch people dancing and enjoying life.
Lastly,  some of us went to the Botanical Garden. Besides the beautiful plants we got to see iguanas and an agoutis.
Tomorrow we head to Copan, Honduras.
