Today our local guide, Ivania, took us to learn about a non profit called Safe Passage which is located next to the city dump. In Guatemala City, poor people pay to go into the dump to find things to sell to recyclers. Safe Passage was created to educate the children of the garbage pickers so they may have a better future. We saw a short film about the American woman who started Safe Passage. We met a woman who had been a picker and she descried her work and how she awas able to stop by first making and selling jewelry made from things found in the dump. She now sews bow ties and make more money than her husband who drives a dump truck. I bought two necklaces. We also got to visit their preschool. It was an eye opening experience.
We went to the city center for lunch and then had a panoramic tour of the city center.
Tomorrow we leave Guatemala City and drive to Santa Catarina.
