Today we went to Tikal National Park. It is 575 square kilometers with thousands of Mayan ruins.  Originally thought to have 3400+ structures, recent scans of the area indicate more than 60,000 structures.  Most are thought to have been built 800 AD when the city had a population of over 100,000 people.
We did a lot of hiking through Tikal.  I went to the top of one pyramid while some others did two or three.  We had a birder with us who pointed out many birds to us.  The park is in the jungle so we saw spider monkeys, howler monkeys, and coatis.
On the ride to Tikal, Walter told us the Mayan story of Earth and man’s creation. It was very interesting.
Tomorrow we leave Guatemala and go to Belize for our last 2 full days.
