We arrived at Puerto Quetzal at 7am. This is the largest port in Guatemala and gets a few cruise ships each month. There is nothing except an arts and crafts market at the port. All excursions went inland with most going to Antigua. I had just been in Antigua in February but rather than just sit on the ship decided to take the Antigua on Your Own excursion. This is a 1 1/2 hour bus ride each way with 3 1/2 hours in Antigua. Our bus had a “technical problem” on the way to Antigua and we had to switch to another bus. We got to see one of the volcanoes erupting black smoke during our drive. We got to Antigua at 1pm (3 hours after leaving the ship) and were told we had 2 1/2 before we had to be back on the bus. They dropped us off at the Jade Museum on the edge of downtown. Steve and I walked to the central square and then walked across town to the open air market. We stopped at a couple of shops on the way. We realized we only had an hour hour left and went to Los Arcos restaurant for lunch. They assured us that we could get our food quickly. The lunch was a Guatemalan stew which was very good. We finished and walked the 15 minutes to the Jade Museum arriving just minutes before the bus showed up.
We were back on board by 530pm and had a light dinner in the Lido.
Tomorrow is a sea day.
