The sail-in was beautiful. We passed a number of icebergs. It is 39 degrees out and the sun is just breaking through the clouds. The high temperature today is 41 degrees.
I had a private tour to go see the Ice Cap. We met at 9:30 and took one of the first tenders into town. Our guide was waiting but we had to wait for the rest of the group. At 10:30 we walked to the boat. It had indoor seating for 12 and outdoor seating for 4. We ended up being a group of 14. The ride to the ice cap took 2 hours. We passed hundreds of icebergs. When we docked, we walked up a steep ramp and hiked for 20 minutes over slick glacier rocks and pebbles to the actual ice cap. We were able to touch and walk on the glacier. The hike was very strenuous and luckily, despite a few falls, no one was injured. They offered us iced tea or a shot of Irish whiskey on glacier ice. Those who know me know I took the whiskey. Then we had to hike back to the boat. As we sailed back the boat had some problems. So a 2 hour ride took longer. One man kept saying that we were going to miss the ship. All aboard was 5:30 and we got back at 5pm. No problem.
Since I missed lunch, I decided to eat early at the Canaletto. Rosie, the wine steward, told me her sister is named Elsie. I don’t know if it is because I am here alone or everyone gets this treatment but the service is excellent. The menu is a sharing menu so I expected too much food but they gave me single portions.
I went to a singles and solos meeting in the Crows Nest which was really fun. Barbara, the party planner, treated us to free glasses of wine.
As we sailed out, a small whale was spotted along side of the ship.
Tomorrow we sail through Prince Christian Sund until the ice gets bad enough that we need to turn around.
Sounds like a great trip. Your pics are lovely…
