August 9, 2015 Bergen, Norway
I was up early and had breakfast in the Lido. Earl, a man from the Singles and solos group, asked if he could join me on my hike. At 8:30 we set off walking to the funicular. It was raining lightly with a pretty strong wind. Since it was Sunday the funicular didn’t open until 9am. We decided to have a coffee at McDonalds and wait. We were hoping the rain would stop.
At 9am we went and took the funicular up the hill. It is the longest funicular that I have ever ridden. At the top there is a great view of the city. After taking the obligatory pictures, we decided to hike. There are a few hiking trails at the top and we hiked 3 of them. The best took us to a lake. As we walked the rain stopped.
After riding back down, we went to the Fish Market. Beautiful fresh fish including whale. They sell cooked fish meals. The cheapest price we saw was $25 for a plate of fish and chips.
We hiked all over the city taking pictures of the brightly colored houses.
After lunch back on the ship, I went out to spend my last 150 Norwegian Kroner. It wasn’t easy since everything is so expensive. I finally bought a little troll.
I went to the Le Cirque dinner. It was delicious. I had the lobster salad, green pea soup, rack of lamb, and, finally, sorbet for dessert.
Tomorrow is a sea day before we get to Amsterdam. 200 passengers will be leaving and about 100 will be coming on board. It is hard to believe this cruise is almost 1/2 over.
Thanks for the update. Can’t believe your cruise is 1/2 over.

Love the colorful houses. Must help when weather is gloomy. The hiking sounds worthwhile, even in the rain. Are the trails muddy? Good to know how expensive it is there.

Beautiful city! We did the Grieg Concert. But it’s nice to see you can do it on your own too.
