Bar Harbor and Disembarkation

August 28, 2015   Bar Harbor, Maine

We all had to go through immigration in Bar Harbor.  They gave us time slots by floor.  I got in a line that moved quickly and showed my passport to the official.  I was back at my cabin 5 minutes after I left it.  Customs will take place in Boston.

I had been to Bar Harbor before so I  waited until 10:30am to go in.  This is a tender port and the Maasdam was moored closer to the town.  The tender ride was about 15 minutes.  I had never been here in the summer before so the town seemed very crowded to me.  I hiked the Shore Path and then went to Side Street Cafe for a lobster roll.  It was delicious and I washed it down with Baxter IPA, a Maine craft beer.

I returned to the ship at 1pm to pack,  play Trivia one last time, and say goodbye to some crew I probably won’t see in the morning.   I had dinner in the Pinnacle Grill with my new friends Linda and Earl.  We had a nice meal and laughed a lot.  I had bought us all silly hats to wear and that started us being silly. After dinner, we went to one last Singles get together.   It was hard to say goodbye to my new friends.

I went back to the cabin to finish packing and put my luggage out in the hall.

When I  woke up at 6am we were already moored at Black Falcon.  I had paid for a Boston tour and transfer to Logan airport since my flight home didn’t leave until 3pm.   My disembarkation time was 8:30 to 8:45.

The dining room was open for an hour starting 6:30am so  I decided to have one last  leisurely breakfast.    Unfortunately I was seated with 3 very negative people who complained about everything.   I ate quickly and left.

At 7:15 they announced that disembarkation would start around 8:30 and that the people who were already blocking stairwells and corridors should either wait in their cabin or a lounge.  I walked around the ship and at 8:15 let my cabin stewards know I was leaving my cabin.  They both gave me a big hug.  I went to the MIX to wait. Linda showed up followed by Earl.  We talked until 8:45 when our tags were called.

It was difficult to get through the atrium to get off the ship because so many people had decided to wait there.  As I was scanned out one last time, I noticed the Captain next to me.  He was escorting his parents off the ship.

They had 3 buses for the tour/transfer.  The tour was interesting and we got to the airport around 12:30.

When I arrived at SFO,  I noticed that the man in front of me had a Lime green HAL tag. I asked him which ship and he said Veendam.   When I said I was on the Veendam too,  four other people said they were on too.  I couldn’t believe that I had never seen any of these people on board.

  1. It has been great following you along, and has made me even more excited about my VOV next summer…unfortunately only Boston to Rotterdam. Glad you arrived in Boston to good weather. Thanks again for posting.

  2. Over and over again, HAL announces that people should stay in their rooms or in a lounge until they are called. I bet quite a few of those on the stairs had sailed HAL before. Something in the salt air must get into their brains!
