September 27, 2016 – Borromean Islands
We left at 9am on a boat to three of the Borromean Islands. First was Isola Bella where we had a tour of the Palazzo Borromeo Construction started in the 1600’s and finished in 1957. It was (and still is) used as the summer home for the Borromean family. The house is beautiful and the gardens spectacular. They built grotto rooms where they could be cool in hot weather. Each grotto room was decorated differently using small stones.
Next stop was Isola Pescatori for a lunch of lake fish. This island is no longer owned by the family.
Final stop was Isola Madre where the family had there main home and another magnificent, English-speaking botanical garden complete with peacocks and colotful pheasants.
After returning to our hotel, we had a group get together with wine and snacks on the roof of the hotel. It was one of those memorable nights talking with good friends.
Tomorrow I am going on an optional tour to Lake Orta.
