October 3, 2016 – Lichtenstein and Seefeld, Austria
We left the hotel at 8am. This group is very good about always being on time. Much better than my last tour.
We drove 4 hours to Vaduz, Lichtenstein with a rest break after 2 hours. We got a quick tour of downtown Vaduz and then had 30 minutes to explore on our own. Carol and I went to the Catholic Church first which was very nice inside. We walked around and looked in a few stores.
We were driven to a Lichtenstein Distillery next. It is run by a man and his wife but has been in the family since the 1800’s. The wife does most of the work and conducted our tour. Her husband has an office job since the distillery makes just enough money to pay its expenses. After learning how they make their handcrafted liquor, we had a light lunch where many of us sampled their gin in tonic. After lunch we sampled 3 of their products which were all very good. My favorite was a grappa. Their award winning whiskey sells for $89 a liter. (Surprise, no one bought a liter bottle.)
After leaving the distillery we headed to our next hotel in Seefeld, Austria. Unfortunately as we entered the first town in Austria traffic crawled for 1/2 hour. Simona said we would get to the hotel before 6. When we were 10km from the hotel traffic stopped. Simona tried but was unable to find put why. We watched many cars ahead of us turn around and head down the mountain. Finally we saw a tow truck coming down the hill with a car that had a smashed in front. Finally we started moving. Then the car in front of us died. Our bus had to wait until the downhill traffic got past to pass the dead car. We were optomistic. Right before the town they have the road down to one lane so we were delayed again. We finally got to our hotel at 6:40pm.
Dinner at the hotel was excellent. We had salad, vegetable soup, Chicken Cordon Bleu with rice and broccoli, and fruit salad with sorbet. Very yummy.
We are here for 5 nights so I have unpacked completely. Tomorrow we’ll walk around Seefeld in the morning and most of us are doing an optional tour called “Austrian Adventure”.
