January 5, 2017 – At Sea getting close to Isla Providencia, Colombia
Another beautiful day at sea. I normally wear scopolamine patches for seasickness. I decided to try to only use them when we hit rough seas. I am going to try one tonight because the tender ride tomorrow to the island is supposed to be rough.
We had a Meet and Greet of 75 people. We all communicated before the cruise on Cruisecritic.com. it was fun to meet all these people. The Captain and heads of most departments attended.
We had our first Cruise Specialists cocktail party at 11:30 this morning. Once again we had the Captain and department heads attend. This group is only 47 people.
There are only 550 passengers on board. The ship never feels crowded.
Linda and I went from the party to a singles and solos lunch. We were at a table for 6 and enjoyed lively conversations with everyone. Unfortunately, we had to leave by 12:50pm for trivia and while we had gotten our appetizers, we left before the entrees were delivered.
We got 20 out of 36 points and did not end up I the top 3 teams. The hardest questions was which Communist leader who died in 1969 was trained in France as a pastry chef?
I attended a lecture on the building of the Panama Canal but left early because the room was freezing. The lecturer, Brett, is very knowledgeable and entertaining.
They give out “Dam Dollars” for playing in games. At the end of the cruises, you can buy tee shirts and other Holland America stuff with them. Knowing this Linda and I played Baggs to get more dollars. She got 2 dollars because her team won. I only got 1 because I am bad at throwing a bag at a slanted board while strong winds are blowing at you.
After dinner we went to Pub Trivia where we got 9 out of 18 points. Since the winning team got 11, we ended in 3rd place and each got another Dam Dollar. (Passengers call them Dam Dollars but they say Grand dollars on them.
To end the night we went to the show- Spencer Robson – a singer/ impersonator. He was just OK.
Tomorrow we get off at Isla Providencia and I’ll be doing snorkeling. Forecast for tomorrow is thunderstorms. Isn’t it dangerous to be in open water if it is lightening?

Hi to my friends who are commenting.  I’ll try to answer when I can find cheap, fast, internet off the ship.

  1. Following you on another trip where you are going the year before we do. Thank you. Questions: if you are doing the complete trip how much ahead of time did you apply for the Brazilian visa? Did you use a visa service? Which one? Thank you for your help. Hope all goes well with your snorkeling!

    1. Not Elsie, but we used Travisa with no problems, well ahead of time (August for February sailing). Have to time it around the need for having the passport to travel. When I had questions, I could call and immediately have a real person answer them as I filled out the forms.
