February 5, 2017 – At Sea
We started today with the 5k “On deck for a cause” walk that raises money for cancer research. It looked like at least 150 people took part.
At trivia we had our 4th win in a row. There were 2 football questions and despite having no one who knows anything we got both answers correct. The questions were “what team has won the most Super Bowls? And which team was in 4 super bowls in the 1990s and lost all 4? The answers are Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills.
This afternoon I went to a Prestige Champagne tasting. We shad Veuve Clicquot, Taitinger, Dom Perignon, and Cristal. They were all quite good.
Tonight is the Super Bowl. They had a tailgate party and showed the game in the showroom. Because of how the ship gets the feed the commercials were not shown. The game was also on the cabin TV so I ended up falling asleep watching the 4th quarter.
February 6, 2017 – Puerto Madryn, Argentina
Puerto Madryn was founded in 1865 by Welsh immigrants. They eventually moved further inland because of the lack of fresh water. Today the town has 100,000 people and many are of Welsh ancestry.
I walked into town and took a city bus tour for an hour. We learned that on Easter the priest puts on a scuba outfit to do the stations of the cross. Three of the stations are done while he is underwater. We were told there is film of this on youtube. This area is “the best” scuba diving in Argentina. The bus took us to a memorial to the Native people. Nearby there are 3 flags – Argentina, Wales, and the town flag.
The town has a beautiful beach that runs the length of the town. There are also many statues and memorials on the walkway above the beach. Also along the beach are trees. When one dies, an artist is allowed to carve it into a permanent piece of art.
The weather today was mid 60’s and everyone was enjoying the warmth after the cold in the antarctic.
Tomorrow is another sea day and then we get to Montevideo Uruguay.
