February 17, 2017 – Salvador de Bahia, Brazil
Last night I attended a special dinner. It was titled South American Street Food. The executive chef and the sommelier were responsible for the 7 courses and the matching wines. Everything was delicious. My favorite was choripan – Argentinian spicy sausage on a roll with chimichurri sauce. This was served with a Spanish red wine.
I was told last night that Salvador de Bahia is the most dangerous port in Brazil. Some who have been here before said that there are many pickpockets and to be very careful. Linda and I walked out and in the terminal saw our trivia friend Patrick. He suggested we walk to the old town together. From the port you walk down the street and then cross a very busy street to get to an elevator that takes you up to the old town. A man came over and for about $16 each offered to take us on a 1 hour walking tour. We decided that sounded good. He took us around the town. We went into the San Francisco Cathedral which was both a church and a convent in the 1800’s. In the courtyard were large blue tile murals. The church was decorated with a lot of gold and wooden sculptures.
We also got to see where Michael Jackson filmed a music video.
It was really hot and sunny so after the tour Linda and I headed back to the ship. We are staying here until 11pm which confuses everyone. Sunset is at 6pm and no one wants to wander around after dark. I guess the next port is close. Tomorrow is a sea day then on Sunday we will be in Recife, Brazil.

  1. Hi Elsie! We just got back from a 14-day Caribbean cruise on the Oosterdam. Read your very interesting blog along the way. I am interested in the amount and type of activities onboard on sea days. That was the one thing in short supply on our trip. But I would think on a Grand Cruise there would be plenty to do onboard.

    1. Welcome home Pam. We have many more activities on a sea day than a normal cruise – 2 to 3 speakers, samba and tango classes, capoeira classes, craft classes and watercolor classes. This is in addition to the normal games and bingo.
