March 1, 2017 – Parintins, Brazil
Parintins is a small city of 100,000 people. It is best know for its Boi Bumba Festival. It is celebrated in June and, on the Amazon, is bigger than Carnaval. Two teams of dancers and singers compete. Each presents the same folktale using floats and bright colored costumes. The winning team gets to present a one hour version in the convention center when cruise ships come to town.
The show was really fun to watch. As we entered, we were each given a caipirinha (a strong Brazilian alcoholic drink). The dancers and singers were very good. The costumes and floats were comparable to those in Rio’s Carnaval.
We sailed out at 3pm. The next two days will be sea days. On March 4, we will be at Devil’s Island. March 11 and our arrival back in Ft. Lauderdale is coming fast.
March 2, 2017 – Sailing out of the Amazon and Crossing the Equator
Today they held the King Neptune Ceremony. Crew who were crossing the equator events for the first time had to kneel before the King and his Queen, then kiss a fish, get slimed, and jump into the swimming pool. It was fun to watch.img_5155wpimg_5159wpimg_5182wpimg_5213wpimg_5231wpimg_5235wpimg_5302wpimg_5278wp
