March 3, 2017 – At Sea heading to Devils Island
Another sea day of lectures, games, and fun. A silent auction was held to benefit a school in Barbados. The Antarctic Research Team left a donation of badges, pins, sweatshirts, and baseball caps. The bridge officers donated the nautical charts for Antarctica and the Amazon.com. There were a lot of other items. Linda bid on and purchased the dinner for 2 at the Canaletto with Kevin, the show host, and Hannah, the culinary arts coordinator. She has invited me to join her.
Tonight was our 2nd to last Gala night. I found a pillow gift when I returned to my room after the late show. It is six (6) salad plates each has a different Holland America old advertising image. The box is quite heavy. I’ll try to get it into a suitcase and hope they get to my house in one piece.
March 4, 2017 – Devil’s Island, French Guiana
There are actually three islands here. The island we went to is Ile Royale, where the governor and guards lived. Prisoners with lighter sentences were housed here and the 2nd island. Devil’s Island – Ile du Diable – was for political prisoners and those who tried to escape. We were only on the main island. Linda and I walked the path around the island by the shoreline. Then we went up the hill to the area where the chapel, hospital, and guards housing were situated. During our walk we saw monkeys, chickens, lizards, and peacocks. The Chapel 4was being renovated. There is a hotel and restaurant. They also rent out apartments in the guards quarters. We saw 4 or 5 families that seem to be staying there on holiday.
We headed back to the ship after 2 1/2 hours. Tomorrow is another sea day. img_5305wpimg_5306wpimg_5323wpimg_5327wpimg_5331wpimg_5337wp

  1. Hi Elsie. I haven’t commented in a while, but I’ve been reading the blog all along. My Dad passed away last Friday and was buried on Tuesday. Sad times for my sister and me, but we are doing OK. Lots to do with life insurance, banks, etc.

Love these pictures! What a wonderful trip this must be. BTW, where is Earl? I thought he was on this trip along with Linda?Love those salad plates with the old HAL advertising! Hope they all make it home in one piece.

Have you found there is a lot to do on sea days on a grand voyage? Jack and I returned Feb. 17th from a 2-week HAL Caribbean cruise on the Oosterdam. Unfortunately, sea days were kind of on the boring side. Very few games, no Dancing with the Stars, bingo was hardly advertised and held in a small room. At least they still played trivia! I just see a general trend on HAL cruises of cut-backs in the area of non-revenue-making activities. I’m hoping that on your grand voyage this is not the case.

Keep the postings coming. Love reading them. Looking forward to your Final Thoughts entry.

  2. Hi Elsie
We enjoyed reading your notes on the SA HAL cruise.
We are thinking of taking this cruise in January 2018.
Would you rec it? How is the ship? Is there enough to do on Sea days? Is the gym equipment enough.
Any thoughts you have would be most appreciated
    Thanks Elise

    1. It was the best cruise that I have been on. The ship is small but I really enjoy smaller ships. We had 620 passengers on a ship that holds 825. Since it is a Grand Voyage, the sea days were filled with lectures and other activities. I don’t use the gym so I can’t speak to the equipment.

  3. Hi Elsie, I’ve just started reading your blog…. we’re booked on 2018 voyage (68 days) and really looking forward to it.
Looks like French Guiana is the only country requiring yellow fever vaccination certificates from all travelers. From what I’ve read on CDC website, an official ICVP form (International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis) signed by your doctor is required. What type of proof did they accept for your voyage?

  4. I had a waiver signed by my doctor because my HMO won’t give the vaccination to anyone over 60. On our trip, I was never asked for it. Others told me that they had to show it at check-in for the cruise. You might want to go to cruisecritic.com and ask the question there.
