March 20, 2019 – Lisbon
We had a city tour this morning emphasizing the Portugese explorers and the importance of trade. We went to Belem to tour the Jeronimos Church where Vasco da Gama is buried. Belem is know for their custard tarts. After the church tour, Christina surprised us with tarts. They were very rich and very good. We drove past the Belem Tower and stopped for pictures of the Monument of the Discoveries, a tribute to the explorers who made Lisbon and Portugal famous with their land discoveries. I was able to take some pictures of the Lisbon bridge that looks just like the Golden Gate Bridge.
In Belem we saw some graffiti by Bordalo II who uses recycled stuff to create the images. He has also done some works in Brooklyn.
Upon return to the city center, my new friends Karen, Dennis, and I took a taxi to the St. Jorges Castle on a hill overlooking Lisbon. We had lunch just outside the castle and the wandered through the interior. There are many peacocks roaming the grounds of the castle. We took another taxi back to the hotel when we all ran out of steam. 70 of the 92 people on the tour leave tomorrow with 22 of us staying for the 3 day post trip. At 7:30pm we got our tiles that we painted and say goodbye to everyone.
Dennis had an early flight requiring a trip to the airport at 5am. Karen and I went to dinner with him and said our goodbyes when we got back to the hotel.
