June 2, 2019 – Hubbard Glacier
An excursion was available at Hubbard Glacier called “Up-Close Exploring Hubbard Glacier and Disenchantment Bay”. About 100 of us signed up for it. An expedition boat picked us up from the ship and took us to 1/2 mile from the glacier face. (The Maasdam only got to 2 miles from the face.) The boat slowly turned for over an hour so we could all see the glacier. There was a lot of calving while we were there. We could clearly hear the cracking sound as the ice separated from the glacier. I highly recommend this excursion.
The entertainment tonight was a second performance by the Alley Cats.
I was asked to give the temperatures for each day. We have been told that the weather in Alaska is unpredictable. I think any temps I give won’t be applicable to future trips. It is important to bring clothes that you can layer. So far the mornings are in the high 40s and by afternoon it is low to mid 50s.
The camera I use is a Canon SX-60. This replaced my Canon SX-50 that got dunked into the ocean in the Galapagos.
Sunrise has been around 4am since getting to Alaska. Sunset has been around 10pm.

NBA finals not shown on board but following on internet.  Go Warriors!
Tomorrow we are in Valdez.

  3. Elsie, I am enjoying your blog and can’t wait to board on the 18th. Your pictures of the glacier are beautiful and it is nice to see a picture of the Maasdam in the bay. I wish this excursion had a bigger passenger load but that would probably defeat the purpose.

If you have a minute, will you see if there is still a launderette on the lower promenade deck. It should be across from room 336. I know they have been removed from most HAL ships.

  4. Beautiful pictures of Hubbard Glacier. Experiencing the calving so close must have been thrilling. I’m Alaskan blue/green with envy!
