So. Georgia Island and Antarctica Recap

I selected this particular tour for one reason – South Georgia Island. Very few cruises stop at So. Georgia and most don’t have single cabins. In September 2019, when Vantage first announced this trip, I reserved it immediately. Unlike my other trips which were delayed due to Covid, this trip started on schedule – 27 months after I reserved it.
The ship had some new ship problems but they are very aware of what they are and I think they’ll be fixed. The Hotel Manager and Cruise Director were very open to our opinions of how to make it even better.
I loved my single balcony cabin. It was bigger than I expected and had a queen size bed. My room steward was very attentive especially when I was stuck in bed for 4 days.
The food was delicious. Breakfast and Lunch were buffet while dinner was ordered from a menu and served. The servers were very helpful and when it was rough seas they would carry your plate for you. The ship is not set up for room service so I really appreciated that they delivered my meals when I was unable to get to the dining room.
The open bar was unexpected but a very nice added amenity.
We had 17 members of the expedition team. They were very knowledgeable and friendly. Our Cruise Director, Patricio, also had experience with multiple expeditions to Antarctica and also provided information on what we were seeing.
South Georgia Island was better than I expected. Hundreds of thousands of penguins and thousands of seals. Antarctica is beautiful – icebergs, glaciers, mountains, and ice filled seas. Obviously, the wildlife was spectacular too.
The time spent in Buenos Aires was good to decompress from travel to BA and again after the cruise.. The hotel was situated near restaurants and stores. The local guides were excellent.
I had never done an expedition cruise before. I am now looking into doing another one.
This was the best trip I have ever been on. The small number of passengers, the expedition team, the ship, and the places we saw all contributed.
What is next? I have a reservation to travel to Egypt and Jordan at the end of March 2022. I am feeling confident it will not be delayed a third time. I hope you can follow me.
Thanks for coming to Antarctica with me!

  1. Going to Egypt and Jordan with OAT, I assume? I did that trip including Jordan in March, 2020 when we were suddenly sent home…I’ve rebooked for this fall…
Your trip sounded fantastic, and Oh, the photos! Thanks so much for sharing. Speaking of expedition trips…I took one several years ago on Hurtigruten. You may have taken a regular coastal Hurtigruten trip, as I have, but this was totally different. It started in Bergen, went to the Faroe Islands, Scotland, and ended in Iceland. It included hiking and trips in Zodiacs. I liked it but it certainly wasn’t as adventurous as your trip!

  2. Hello Elsie, I am Jim Anderson’s wife, Marilyn, and have been following your travel blogs for a while now. I wanted to thank you for all the time you spend writing about your adventures, I love to travel with you vicariously. Also, thank you for answering Jim’s questions about the Covid testing requirements we will be facing before traveling to Egypt. They have me worried as we live so far from any testing sight that has any guarantees good enough for international travel. Please let us know if you find any good expedition travel, as I too love that kind of travel! Thanks again, can’t wait to meet you this coming March.🤞 Marilyn

  3. Great trip. Sorry you had to miss parts of it but well worth it anyway with your balcony cabin. Thanks for your excellent coverage. I will know more about what to expect if I decide to go. ________________________________
