What I have learned about trip insurance

This is a special entry to explain how Vantage trip insurance worked. Other tour companies may also operate the same way.

There are two parts to the insurance:

PART A is before the trip commences. This covers the traveler having to cancel the trip.

PART B starts when the trip starts and covers lost baggage, trip delays, illness during trip…..

Vantage self insured PART A while Allianz was responsible for PART B. No where in either part does it cover insolvency of the tour provider.

What does this mean for me? The bulk of the money I have paid would be repaid by Vantage since they canceled the trips. BUT Vantage has little or no monies or assets. So I don’t get anything back there.

My understanding from Allianz is that the Part B payment was returned to Vantage to return to me. No money back here either.

Since I paid directly from my checking account in order to get a discounted price on each trip, there is no way to dispute the charges.

It is REALLY important to read and question how the trip provider insurance works before purchasing. Consider paying by credit card.

Also, many persons who purchased outside insurance have found that their policies also do not c9ver insolvency.

  1. Thanks for this information, Elsie. It is unfair and certainly not right for the traveler to have to bear the financial loss of the company cancelled trips. (And for the insurance to be worthless to the traveler.) Keep us posted on any updates!

  2. Thanks for the info on travel insurance – what a racket, huh? Insofar as the Vantage fiasco, we are going to file a complaint with our state Attorney General’s office. Since Vantage is pretty much insolvent, probably won’t see any refunds, so kind of a last gasp, but worth a try!

  3. This is really shocking. Mostly I do not understand why Allianz pays your insurance payment to Vantage. Should this not be an independent insurance? We are so sorry, Elsie. We are looking forward to your trips to come 🙂

  4. Hi Elsie. We got our money back from Allianz. Took FOREVER, but after submitting our bills they finally paid up. Of course, we were the last ones out and you were the first, so our expenses were significantly higher. Next time you are in N. CA, look us up! Susan
