June 6, 2019 – Anchorage
I did the “Portage Glacier Cruise and Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center” excursion. We started out by bus at 8:45am. It took a little over an hour to get to Portage Lake. We boarded the Ms Ptarmigan and spent about 90 minutes sailing around the lake. A U.S. Forest Service guide did a commentary as we sailed. The glacier is receding fairly quickly. The weather today was sunny, clear and warm (mid 60s). The guide said most of the time it is rainy at the lake.
After we left the boat, we stopped so we could pick grab a quick lunch. Lunch was not included in the tour.
We finished by going to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It is a refuge for injured or orphaned wildlife. The animals are in large enclosures. We saw brown bears, black bears bison, caribou, moose, elk, wolves, coyotes, and more.
We got back to the ship about 3:15pm.
I immediately went to the thermal spa to unwind. For those on the 6/18 cruise, the cost was $229 for a single and $369 for a couple for the 21 days.
